The City of Airdrie’s role in affordable housing is creating an environment where private industry and non-profit organizations can build the types of homes that meet the needs of the local labour force and broader community.

When the City uses the term affordable housing, it refers to safe and secure housing that is achievable by costing no more than 30 per cent of an individual's household income and meets the basic needs of an individual and/or family. Both market options (private) and subsidized housing fall under the umbrella of affordable housing. Supportive housing also falls under the umbrella of affordable housing but refers to a model that combines affordable housing with coordinated support services administered by the Province of Alberta.

To achieve our vision in enabling housing diversity and affordability, the City is exploring sustainable urban development to strategically increase the type and number of homes needed to support our growing community.

Action items from Airdrie’s Principled Housing Action Plan for creating this environment include:

  • Build municipal capacity to advance affordable housing solutions
  • Increase housing delivered by non-profit providers
  • Grow housing serving Airdrie’s labour force
  • Accelerate the success of Airdrie Housing Limited
  • Strengthen intergovernmental and community partnerships
  • Improve access to city and community services
