Review of winter maintenance services

Airdrie winters bring snow, ice, and changing road conditions. Each winter, our crews clear roads, sidewalks, pathways, and outdoor rinks following a priority system that focuses first on major routes, emergency access, and school zones. In addition, the City maintains over 100 kilometres of pathways and sidewalk sections adjacent to public property.

Snow clearing refers to various activities to maintain passable roads, sidewalks and paths. This could include ice-control (e.g. sanding and/or salt), packing down snow to a hard-pack, plowing (creates a windrow of snow), or removal which means hauling away piled snow.

The City uses a priority rating system for different types of roads (e.g. arterial roads, collector roads, residential roads) and sidewalks, pathways, and outdoor rinks in order to manage winter travel in the city.

This year the City of Airdrie is undertaking a review of our winter maintenance services. Enhanced service levels may require additional funding — your feedback will help us understand what residents value most. Share your thoughts on service levels for:

  • Road snow clearing
  • Sidewalk and pathway clearing
  • Outdoor rink maintenance
  • Parking during snow events
  • Application of traction and de-icing materials
  • Residential street clearing
  • Online tools like the snow map

Your feedback will help shape future snow and ice control services and will be shared with Council as part of the review in the first half of 2026.
